Riverbay at Co-op
Type: Cultural
Location: Bronx, NY
We were asked by the representative board of the community co-op to develop some outdoor space that was abandoned and had fallen into disuse. It was in need of attention and it had been suggested, voted on, funds raised, and agreed that basketball and tennis courts would be ideal and be the perfect re-use for this plot. We fit three basketball courts into the landscape and with a single tennis court created recreational uses for at least 34 persons at one time. We proposed berms be built between courts for seating for casual onlookers and skewed the courts to avoid interference between games. Shading canopies of fabric stretched over the viewing positions along with lighting to extend the available playing time were suggested. It has become a popular gathering and socializing area for the residents.
